Every time a new NSX comes out which like the World Wars has only unfolded twice so far in known human history, the whole auto industry goes head over heels in anticipation. Be it the first-gen or the very latest one, they had all car nuts raving about the sophistication and reliability that generations of enthusiasts have come to expect from Honda over the years. But when they launch the thing, practically no one shows up at the dealerships to buy one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not the design that deters prospective buyers because both versions captured the essence there respective eras better than most of their peers from the same timeframe, nor is it the price because for the kind of tech and performance on offer, both the versions were nothing short of a bargain (Looking at you all the P1s and Porsche 918s of the world).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/motologstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/d885120e-03d5-4071-8bbc-5f679653e95b-4-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-196\" width=\"600\" height=\"390\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Even the ownership experience of an NSX is nothing short of a dream, but it does require a sensible approach, a trait that&#8217;s been commonly associated with Saab and old Volvo owners. Only sensible people with advanced degrees who enjoy doing their taxes and reading instruction manuals will be able to appreciate it. For the rest of the crowd looking for a quintessential &#8220;supercar&#8221; that&#8217;s loud, shouty yet practical, just get an R8.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cars are like fine dining. There&#8217;s the American way of making things delicious with extra cheese and when it comes to their cars, there&#8217;s nothing they can&#8217;t improve with extra displacement, the Italians like their delicately tossed, thin-crust pizza; like to style their cars with the same panache. But when it comes to Japan and Honda in particular, just like their sushi, it&#8217;s all about precision and balance. Even Gordan Murry famously took inspiration from the NSX to create the McLaren F1 and I don&#8217;t know about you but I sure as hell consider this a credential in itself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For those of you less familiar with this automotive icon, the NSX stands for New Sportscar eXperimental, but contrary to popular lore the &#8220;X&#8221; actually represents the mathematical symbol for an unknown variable. But the NSX wasn&#8217;t your everyday sushi, it was special because it was spiced by the Italians. Back in 1984 when the NSX was being conceived as a concept, Honda appointed Pininfarina to design the new age sportscar and as a result, the NSX looked more futuristic than the best from Ferrari and Maserati at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially, the team behind the NSX considered a 2.0L four-banger, but thankfully even they realized it wasn&#8217;t the wisest decision. The second and more worthy candidate was the 2.7L V6 from the Legend which had an Acura badge for the North American market. But even that motor lacked the grunt so they started fiddling with it until they found their desired configuration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final engine was a twin-cam, 24V 3.0L bespoke masterpiece producing 250 hp and in 1997 as part of a mid-cycle update that also saw the removal of the beloved pop-up headlights, the displacement was bumped up to 3.2L which helped it gain an additional 26 BHP. In typical Honda fashion, it ended up being an over-engineered, high revving unit that got titanium connecting rods and that&#8217;s responsible for the OG NSX&#8217;s iconic 8300 rpm redline. F1 driver Satoru Nakajima was hired to fine-tune the handling of the NSX and even Ayrton Senna gave inputs that helped the NSX achieve its near-telepathic handling.&nbsp;&nbsp;Another reason for the success of the initial version, at least among journalists and enthusiasts, was its unmatched ergonomics and drivability and this makes it arguably the most sensible and practical supercar to date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new NSX despite its contrasting approach compared to the original manages to communicate well with its environment. The complex quad-motor drive and completely digitized steering and brakes which do not have any physical linkages manage to work in complete harmony to deliver a drive that&#8217;s full of feedback and character. And even though it was probably one of the most complex AWD systems of the time, it&#8217;s capable of glorious power slides and feels way more tail-happy than one would expect.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h1><strong>NSX Notes for the Enthusiast :&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Ridiculous thrust :<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter which gear you are in, no matter what speed you are doing; the modern NSX with its hybrid powerplant can throw you back in your seat as soon as you decide to put that pedal to the metal. This also results in its very &#8220;video game&#8221; like handling where it feels like it&#8217;s going to understeer but it doesn&#8217;t, courtesy of its electric motors splitting torque faster than our minds can fathom.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Unmatched Practicality:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The service intervals for both generations are Intune with a regular mass-market car like a Civic or a Golf. A truly rare phenomenon not just by olden standards, even modern supercars struggle to keep up with the convenience this hybrid sports car offers. This is another reason why it nicks the crown from the Audi R8 and the 911 Carrera which even though offer excellent drivability, just can&#8217;t match this iconic badge from the east in overall reliability and running costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/motologstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/honda-nsx-black-road-2-1024x653.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-209\" width=\"600\" height=\"392\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Is it even a Supercar?:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Honda set out to make a sports car, with the very first NSX, but it ended up sitting in an award but a strategically significant position in the classification system. The original, though overpriced if you choose to purely go by the numbers, but in reality, it was quite the bargain, because it managed to nail the usability factor, a feat which at the time, could only be achieved by two cars from two different ends of the spectrum. By that I mean you could take your NSX to work Monday through Friday and then hit the track on the weekend without any compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>NSX-R &amp; NSX Type-S:<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are reading this, then you have probably seen the Top Gear episode where Richard Hammond test drove the NSX Type-R, right after getting out of a Civic Type-R and called it too extreme and very un-honda because it was too expensive and too easy going. That was largely the mindset that lead Honda to create the Type-R version in the first place. He also mentioned that the same year they only managed to move 28 units of the car, which sounded like an insult back then, but now the lack of sales has resulted in its rarity and exclusivity. As a result, a recent example in excellent condition is expected to carry a starting price of $408,000 at an auction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/motologstudio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2022-acura-nsx-type-s-ogi-1.jpg.webp\" alt=\"Honda Acura NSX History. Acura NSX Type-S\" class=\"wp-image-189\" width=\"600\" height=\"350\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s not just the rarity that triggered this sudden interest, Chrysler TC was also pretty rare and a sales disaster, but you don&#8217;t see people lining up to buy those at half a million a pop. The NSX was always ahead of the curve, too far ahead in fact for people to appreciate what it brought to the table. Almost 2 decades after the original&#8217;s demise, people have found a special appreciation for this &#8220;underpowered&#8221; sports car in a time when 1000 horsepower has become the new normal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The folks at Honda are well aware of this history lesson, but despite this, they launched the Type-S at a time when the sales are steadily stagnating and most likely the brilliant NSX Type-S will be met with the same fate, but for Honda, it is not about the figures, it&#8217;s about making a halo product that shows the world that we aren&#8217;t just about the frugal Civics and practical Odysseys, it is a way of showing their engineering prowess and rich racing pedigree and without a doubt in a couple of decades, people will realize how it always was the epitome of hybrid powertrains. None of the seasoned brands like Ferrari or Porsche will ever admit it, but Honda quite literally laid out the blueprint for the future supercar, and no matter how much these brands harp on about their racing pedigree and cutting edge innovation, the fact remains that the NSX started it all, and wrote the playbook which since then has seen various adaptations by seasoned players in the form of their respective visions of the future and they have managed to sell them with 7 digit price tags. Everything from the million-dollar La Ferrari, right down to the latest Ferrari 296 GTB is evidence that even the greats are now following suit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acura\/Honda is cursed.
