But in the 21st-century people seem to take a more liberal approach towards pressing issues from back in the day, like racial and sexual discrimination but as it would appear, that conservative energy had to be channelized somewhere and the automotive industry is the new victim. So we are living the 60’s in reverse.

But I believe the biggest reason for this hate was the fact that Mercedes was single-handedly responsible for coining the term “4-door coupe”. Now by definition, a coupe is A car with a fixed roof, two doors, and a sloping rear. And this is when the blatent lying started which continues till this day wherein all German manufacturers have come to some sort of low-key gentlemen’s agreement to slap a random number next to their model name (such as 250, 220 in case of Mercs, 30d, 20d in case of BMW, etc) that once upon a time denoted the engine displacement but now they just prove that German’s can’t count for nuts, but we’ll come back to this rant some other day.

For now, coming back to the coupe crisis, the CLS even though was based on a completely flawed marketing scheme, the car was a looker and to no one’s surprise, it quickly caught on. This led to Audi and even BMW following in Merc’s footsteps with models like the A7 and 6-series Gran Coupe.

But the Bavarian’s felt a little cornered and in a bid to beat Mercedes at their own game, created the famous BMW X6, a car/SUV/coupe SUV; famous for all the wrong reasons. But the fact remains it was a far cry from the boxy SUVs of the time, which helped it become the sales success that it is known to be today despite its blatant lack of practicality or off-road prowess. But again, if you think about it, the X6 wasn’t the first to try something like this. Many people today admit that the Aztek was a pioneer in the crossover segment before it was even a thing, a product of meticulous R&D by GM’s top brass to create the vehicle of the future and coincidently was also one of the biggest financial blunders for the company despite its exceptional scores in Consumer Satisfaction Index. The sloping roofline combined with its bold attempt to cross the segment barrier is probably what inspired BMW to come up with the X6, I guess we’ll never really know.

The roots of marrying SUV levels of ground clearance with a sleek, car-like body can be traced back to the AMC Eagle from 1980 which got a proper 4×4 drivetrain and enough ground clearance to put most modern crossovers and SUVs to shame but the idea was way ahead of its time and the Eagle was a sales disaster with a 2-year production run, making this a rare machine and perhaps a future collectible.

Chapter 3- The Sneacar Era

Word – Sneacar
Definition – Noun
A childish amalgamation of the terms Sneaker and Car choosen due to its closely resemblance to the common footwear.

Now coming to our present-day situation, Coupe SUVs, 4-door coupes are all a common sight on our roads today and its clear that no matter how much petrol heads like us (or gearheads depending on your philosophical bend) scream and cry, the fact remains that the everyday consumer is infatuated by the idea of a vehicle that can do it all, because people want more, not just from there cars but from every aspect of there lives, a trait that’s hardwired into the human psyche.

Building on that, one motoring legend by the name of Carol Shelby found this out the hard way when he made the GT350 Mustang and his loyal customer base who wanted a racecar for the road in the first place started complaining to him, about how uncomfortable it was. Let’s start with the Ford Evos, shall we? This isn’t the first time Ford has used the Evos name, it was back in 2011 that Ford introduced the Evos concept (designed by Stefan Lamm), a PHEV coupe that looked like a Mustang straight out of 2045 and it was a stunning looking vehicle, to say the least.

Now the new Evos which is a production-ready car aimed at the Chinese market bears very little resemblance to the original concept but it’s not hard to see how the concept lends some of its design cues to this “Senacar”. The Evos is a glimpse into the brand’s future designs, technology, and marketing strategies and according to Ford “The Evos has been described as a mix between a crossover and a fastback or station wagon due to its low-slung proportion”. The design is reminiscent of the recently unveiled Ford Equator and no matter how much you criticize the jack of all trades design, it’s hard to call this a bad-looking automobile. The Evos is going to be a very crucial product for Ford, and the features that you see on this concept including the massive touchscreen slab and the coupe, crossover, SUV body style are all here to stay.

Now moving to the French, they are a step ahead of the Americans. Amidst a grand merger and formation of yet another automotive giant, Stalantis (which is the merger of PSA and FCA), Citroën has managed to launch their all-new C5-X amidst the pandemic. This new “sneacar”, also tries to be the jack of all trades by merging 3 of the most popular body styles and unlike the Evos, you can go ahead and buy one right now.

Now talking about the C5-X, Citroen has put immense emphasis on the vehicle’s dynamics and comfort, by using an all-new dual-damper design which allows the springs to be softer than normal and that results in a very plush and cushy ride without having to sacrifice on stability. But most importantly Citroën is betting big on this coalescence of body styles as it is their flagship offering and virtually sits in the same segment as the 3-series and C-Class but has a completely different approach which is proof that auto manufacturers strongly believe that the “sneacar” ear is here to stay and cars like these are going to be a common sight on roads.

Bottom Line

In conclusion, auto manufacturers are innovating every day and introducing inventive designs. Back in the day, people thought that bubble cars and compact 3-wheelers were the future of personal transportation and that the wood panel station wagon was the default family mover, but people along with their vehicles have long outgrown that era, and the once upon a time, highly criticized coupe SUV is now a common sight on our streets today.

So we can sit and blame companies for making crossovers and Coupe SUVs but it’s the consumers who buy them that are to be blamed. Ultimately all companies are driven by profits and to stay in business, they must innovate even if it comes at the cost of hurting the sentiments of a certain sect that worships cars. So next time when you look at an Evos or C5-X on the road with admiration or hate, presumably from the seat of your fancy crossover, remember that even you as an automotive enthusiast are responsible for its existence.
Drive tastefully.

A look at the past and future of automotive design.
